Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu

Balakrishnan, from Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, is a B.Sc. Physics graduate from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. He is currently pursuing a second degree in Direction and Screenplay Writing at the Tamil Nadu Government MGR Film and Television Institute, Taramani, Chennai.

He believes that art allows humans to explore a wide range of emotions and takes on many evolving forms over time. Among these, cinema stands out as a significant art form in the modern era—an experience that goes beyond mere viewing. For him, the joy of creating cinema surpasses the pleasure of experiencing it. With a deep desire to explore and immerse himself in life’s many facets, he chose to study filmmaking as a means to fulfill this purpose.

Many aspiring filmmakers from Tamil Nadu and beyond join the Tamil Nadu government film institute with high hopes. Staying in the hostel, however, brought unexpected challenges. The hostel often felt overrun by insects and snakes, with stagnant rainwater pooling outside and even seeping into rooms due to poor maintenance. The bathrooms were in a deplorable state, adding to the discomfort.

Despite these conditions, the resilience of the students amazed me. They remained undeterred, united by their passion for cinema, and embraced the struggle with positivity. Students from diverse states and backgrounds bonded over shared experiences, finding joy in cultural activities and mutual support. Their unwavering dedication to their dreams, even in such trying circumstances, was both inspiring and humbling—a testament to the power of unity and perseverance in the face of adversity.
