Hannah Cooke

Germany

Hannah Cooke's work has been shown in numerous international solo and group exhibitions. She was awarded the prestigious MO_Kunstpreis by the Museum Ostwall, which included the purchase of her videos (Ada vs.)  for the collection. She explores themes of challenging authority, disrupting systems, and questioning norms. With humor, she critiques established power structures and sheds light on the inner workings of the art world.

Ada vs. Emin, Ada vs. Abramović

Marina Abramović and Tracey Emin, two influential female artists, have perpetuated the notion that women must choose between their artistic careers and family life. Two of the most influential female artists of our time thus reproduce the idea that as a woman, you can‘t have it all. In contrast, male artists like Gerhard Richter, Pablo Picasso, and Lucien Freud have successfully balanced their careers and fatherhood.

Hannah Cooke stages herself with her daughter Ada in two settings in which she meticulously quotes famous artworks by Tracy Emin (My Bed, 1998) and Marina Abramović (The Artist is present, 2010). She shows herself to us as an artist AND a mother and challenges us to question stereotypes.
