The Goat Who Could Speak

Every time I leave my temporary flat in Thiruvanmiyur, my eyes fall on an old woman living on the streets. Her name is Kousalya, and she lives with her elder sister and a family of goats. Despite the rush of people heading to offices and schools, Kousalya’s love for her goats is clear. The goats, malnourished and unable to produce milk, receive nothing in return for her care. Kousalya left her studies and home at a young age due to the deception of those around her. She believes that animals can understand any language spoken to them.

One day, a small brown goat with white markings approached me. Her eyes weren’t blank as I expected, but seemed to recognize me. Then, as a car passed, Kousalya ran to scold the goats lying on the road. She held the little goat close, and as it glanced at me, I realized there’s much more for us to understand about the world.
