Palakural
Palakural is an immersive audiovisual installation that delves into the vibrant multiplicity and intricate cultural interrelations within Tamil Nadu. The work unfolds as a textured soundscape of personal and collective histories, reflecting Siva's exploration of sound, layered to capture the palpable tensions and sensory atmosphere of life across Vellore and Chennai. Created with the guidance of artist-curator Jaisingh Nageshewaran, Palakural seeks to visually and auditorily invoke the complexity of Tamil identity and memory.
This soundscape is enriched by culturally resonant Tamil instruments such as the parai, played by students of Mani Maran from Buddhar Kalai Kuzhu, symbolizes an instrument with layered caste implications. The ancient yazh, reintroduced in a contemporary format by the studio Uru in Chennai, brings a haunting resonance dating back to the 2nd century B.C.E. Additional sonorities include the pulsating rhythms of kaai kari sandhai (vegetable markets), pazham sandhai (fruit markets), and meen sandhai (fish markets) of Vellore.
