Radha Rathi

India

Radha Rathi, living and working in Chennai, India, explores common themes such as the nature of things, human behaviour, scenes of her dreams, and the landscape of memories in her work. She is drawn to intricate details and the mysteries of the universe, from the intimacy of human skin to the vastness of space and spirituality. Her artwork provides clues, but leaves room for interpretation, inviting viewers to project their own experiences and fill in the gaps.

I glitter you with my thousand eyes

Joyce Fleuckiger, a theologian, poetically asks, “What can we learn about the Indian goddess—her agency, her limits, her desires—through her interactions with humans?” This question envisions a world where gods and goddesses are not passive figures but active agents, engaging with humanity. The raw, feminine power of goddess idols is undeniable, their presence amplified when encountered in unexpected spaces—on street corners or beneath trees. This project aims to explore and dissect the energy these idols radiate, reflecting our deepest beliefs and societal forces and uncover the energy these idols radiate, exploring how they reflect and influence our daily lives. I glitter you with my thousand eyes examines this dynamic, showing how these deities allow us to see ourselves and the hidden forces shaping society. The male gaze on female idols—sculpted, adorned, and maintained by men—suggests a shift in masculinity, one that recognizes female power as integral. These deities, adorned with opulence, mirror the complexities of women being labeled “too much,” yet always demanding to be seen. In the digital age, these deities persist—transcending time, adapting, and finding their way into our lives, ever-present.
