Los Angeles, USA
I’m Samaya Sayana-Manchanda, a 16-year-old photographer from Los Angeles with roots in Punjab and Andhra Pradesh. I began photographing at 14, using it to explore my identity and connect with my family, especially through portraiture. Capturing intimate moments, particularly with my Amama (grandmother), helps bridge emotional gaps and create deeper connections when words fall short. My work reflects my love for storytelling and the relationships that shape me.
Generations
"Generations" explores the powerful relationships between the women in my life, particularly within the context of traditional Hindu culture, where women often go unrecognized. Through my lens, I document their strength, sacrifices, and the deep connections they share, highlighting their pivotal roles in shaping our family. My grandmother, or amama, has been a spiritual guide, helping me overcome anxiety through practices like chanting. In capturing moments like my grandmother and her sister together, I reflect on the importance of family ties. My great-aunt, in the later stages of dementia, still recognizes me visually, reinforcing my deep longing for connection with my elders.
