The Threads that Connect Us
Fotokids (Guatemala)
From its humble beginnings in Guatemala City's garbage dump, Fotokids, now in its 33rd year, has served thousands of at-risk children in Central America affected by poverty and violence, giving them a chance to realize dreams of a better life. Beginning with children aged 10 to 11, we enroll them in an 8-year curriculum, that combines educational scholarships with vocational training.
Using photography, graphic design, IT, and vocational training as essential tools, the children learn self-expression, creativity, and leadership, giving them a greater opportunity for future employment.
Fotokids is more than an educational program; it is a transformative experience that empowers young people to break free from the cycles of poverty and violence, envisioning a future filled with possibilities.
Although Fotokids has had 70 exhibitions in 15 countries, this is a very unique showing for us and one we are proud to present. Our exhibition for the Children’s Photo Biennale 2024 focuses on the children's creativity and imagination. Each of these images from children 11 to 17 years old, from Guatemala City and Santiago Atitlán, show their growth in visual expression beyond our classical, often gritty, documentation of their environment. They have been able to transform a life lived in poverty and violence to one of beauty. and one reflecting the universal dance that is childhood.
Their voices and visions reach a global audience, affirming that, regardless of age or origin, art has the power to Illuminate and transcend boundaries.
