Workshop by Anshika Varma and Ann Griffin

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Artist and publisher, Anshika Varma and editorial designer Ann Griffin, come together to offer a workshop for photographers who have a regular artistic practice and are interested in learning about the book-making process.

Ann Griffin is a Zürich-based designer who collaborates with artists and publishers, specializing in photography book design and leading workshops and retreats. Anshika Varma works with photography and printed matter, exploring the intersection of personal, collective, and mythical histories. 

REQUIREMENTS
  • Photographers who have a regular artistic practice and are interested in learning about the book-making process.
  • The participant should have a photography project in an advanced stage, ready to be edited with the intention of making a publication.
  • Images from the project ready in digital files and small 9x12 prints
  • A good command of English
  • A laptop with Adobe CC or similar software. 
  • The typology of the project is completely open (documentary, artistic, still life, research, archive…) but must be a coherent project in its whole.
  • We recommend editing a series of 80 – 150  images prior to the workshop.
  • All participants are expected to commit to the full program when applying (On all 5 days)

CONTENT OF APPLICATION
  • PDF with selection images of the project/ (photographic images or an other related material) with a selection of 50-60 images.
  • Text explaining the project, 300 words to max one page 
  • CV/BIO/Full contact details
  • Website if available
  • Do you have a laptop available for use during the workshop? If yes, does it have Adobe CC or similar software?

CONCEPT

Over the course of 5 days, participants will understand how the grammar of editing, design and structure aligns with a photographic body of work through the book medium. Working through intentionality, both instructors will engage with each participant's practice to find approaches to their dummy books.

All tools and materials will be provided to the participants. The workshop will also end with a printed dummy from the draft arrived at with the mentors. 

WORKSHOP CONTENT AND PROGRAM

In Theory

  • Theory inputs about publishing, self-publishing
  • Exchange about situations in Europe and India
  • Analyze books, materials, layout based on  examples

In practice

  • Exchange & feedback about your project in individual and group sessions
  • Suggesting possible edits and a series for the book dummy
  • Thinking of the book as an object  (printing techniques, materials, size)

Outcome

  • Create a dummy version of the book printed digitally and hand bound
  • Final presentation / exhibition of dummies could be public
