Moving identities: Saminathapathar Narayanaswamy

In the aftermath of British colonial rule, there was a redefinition of India and Sri Lanka's citizenship laws, rights, and measures concerning migrants and international borders. The Indian Ocean, once a channel connecting the two nations, transformed into a formidable barrier for people on either side. Extradition, family separation, isolation, and deportation due to loss of citizenship awaited over 10,000 migrants. 

Tilaxan Tharmapalan's project, "Moving Identities," delves into the story and identity of Narayanasamy Paththar, a migrant, to explore how borders, identities, and citizenship constructs intersect with the evolving laws and dynamics of these neighboring countries.

ARTIST BIO:

Tharmapalan Tilaxan is an independent photographer based in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. He has been documenting the transformation of Sri Lankan culture and environment, its people and communities for over 12 years. He plays the dual role of an artist and archivist and is a collector of old photographs and objects. His work has opened creative doors for him to express more about his observations.

தர்மபாலன் ரிலக்சன் இலங்கையின் யாழ்ப்பாணத்தை தளமாகக் கொண்ட ஒரு சுயாதீன புகைப்படக்காரர். அவர் 12 வருடங்களுக்கும் மேலாக இலங்கையின் கலாச்சாரம் மற்றும் சூழல்கள், அதன் மக்கள் மற்றும் சமூகங்களின் மாற்றத்தை ஆவணப்படுத்தி வருகிறார். ஒரு புகைப்படவியலாளர் மட்டுமின்றி ஒரு ஆவண காப்பாளராகவும் செயற்பட்டு வருகின்றார். அவரது வேலைகள் அவரது அவதானிப்புகளைப் பற்றி மேலும் வெளிப்படுத்துவதற்கான ஆக்கப்பூர்வமான கதவுகளைத் திறந்துள்ளது.
