CPB4 Arts Mediators (Short-Term)
Position Overview:
The Chennai Photo Biennale (CPB) is seeking an enthusiastic and passionate Arts Mediator for a short-term role to assist with the upcoming Edition 4, running from 1 December 2024 to 20 March 2025. As an Arts Mediator, you will be responsible for facilitating engaging experiences for visitors at the various exhibition sites. The position is ideal for individuals with a strong interest in the arts, education, and cultural mediation, as well as those passionate about photography and contemporary visual arts.
Key Responsibilities:
Visitor Engagement:
Act as the first point of contact for visitors at the three CPB venues: Lalit Kala Akademi, VR Mall, and Egmore Museum.
Provide information about the Biennale's exhibitions, artists, themes, and the context behind the artworks.
Lead guided tours, both group and individual, for a diverse audience, including school groups, tourists, and art enthusiasts.
Engage in discussions with visitors, encouraging questions, reflections, and dialogue around the artworks on display.
Support the Learning Program:
Assist with educational activities, workshops, and events for various age groups.
Collaborate with artists, curators, and other cultural professionals to deliver enriching, informative sessions for the public.
Support the CPB team in organizing and executing art-related programming, including family-friendly workshops, panel discussions, and interactive sessions.
Provide Exhibition Support:
Ensure the exhibitions run smoothly by assisting with visitor logistics, crowd control, and maintaining a respectful, safe atmosphere.
Help maintain the condition of exhibits by ensuring that visitors are aware of the proper etiquette in the gallery space.
Assist in setting up and de-installing exhibitions as needed.
Feedback and Reporting:
Collect visitor feedback on exhibitions, events, and the general visitor experience to help improve future programming.
Report any issues or concerns related to the exhibitions, installations, or visitor behavior to the CPB team.
Promote CPB and Its Activities:
Promote the objectives of the Biennale and the cultural value of the works exhibited.
Assist in maintaining a welcoming and informative environment for all visitors, enhancing the public’s understanding of contemporary art.
Qualifications & Skills:
A strong passion for contemporary art and photography, with a keen interest in arts education and public engagement.
Previous experience in art mediation, museum/gallery education, or related fields is preferred but not essential.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with a wide range of audiences (including children, art professionals, and the general public).
Knowledge of contemporary art practices and an understanding of the role of the arts in public life is an advantage.
Proactive and flexible with the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work on-site at multiple venues across Chennai (Lalit Kala Akademi, VR Mall, Egmore Museum).
Work Schedule:
Full-time position, with flexible working hours depending on the exhibition schedule and public programs.
Must be available during weekends, public holidays, and evenings, as required by event timings.
